On Friday, before the New Hampshire World Affairs Council, he promised that, if elected president, he will do just that."

Yesterday in Nashua, Barack Obama promised a voter that, if elected, he would end the War in Iraq. Here's the story from the AP's Phil Elliott:

"A woman's tearful plea to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to end the Iraq war momentarily caught him off guard Friday at a New Hampshire town hall meeting.

The Illinois senator vowed to end the conflict if elected."

Ron Paul Beats McCain, Giuliani in NH Fundraising

From The Hotline:

"According to OpenSecrets, Ron Paul "raised more money" in NH than John McCain or Rudy Giuliani in the 1stQ. Neighbor Mitt Romney "was far and away" the biggest fundraiser in NH, raising more than "one-third of all the money raised" in the state. Of course, all this NH money "is but a rounding error on the national totals. Well, maybe not in Paul's case" (Concord Monitor's "Primary Monitor Blog," 4/19).

Obama Calls For Review of Gun Policies

At a Nashua senior center this afternoon, Barack Obama called for a review of national gun policies. He told the crowd that, "We're still selling handguns to crazy people . We're supposed to have a system that these people are screened out. What's clear is the background check system in this case failed entirely."

Dodd Calls For Tax on Polluters

During his three-day trip to the Granite State, Senator Chris Dodd laid out his energy policy. Here is the story from John DiStaso:

"Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd brought his call for a $50 billion tax on polluters from a Washington think tank to a New Hampshire kitchen table today. Over coffee, juice, fruit and cake, he told 10 local political and clean energy activists his plan contains “tough but important steps” toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

Huckabee Campaigns Hard In NH

Campaign and Election's Beth LaMontagne has the latest story on Mike Huckabee's visit to New Hampshire.

"Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee might not be polling among the top tier of presidential candidates, but he proved this week in New Hampshire that he knows how to campaign like them.

In a whirlwind tour of the southern half of the state on Wednesday, the former heavyweight-turned-marathoner ran a 5K fun run in Manchester, jammed on the guitar with the Oyster River Middle School jazz band, lunched with the Strafford County Federation of Republican Women, attended a few house parties and delivered a policy speech on health care to 50 nursing students at St. Anselm College."

Dodd Touts Energy and NH Primary

This evening, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd began a three day swing through New Hampshire. Dodd spend the night at T.R. Brennan's for a reception honoring State Senator Betsi DeVries. Here's the story from AP's Phil Elliott:

"Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd told New Hampshire Democrats on Thursday they are the "surrogates for the nation" - and that more of them should be paying attention to him."

NH Blogs On The Primary

Two New Hampshire Blogs has the latest in primary opinion. Granitegrok argues that New Hampshire shouldn't hold the first-in-the-nation primary, while GreenMountainPolitics1 hears the primary could be held near Thanksgiving. Here their scoops and links"

Granitegrok: "Hosting the first-in-the-nation primary is a privilege and an awesome responsibility. The State holding the first-in-the-nation primary exerts tremendous influence over the nation’s choice for President. This means that it is not enough that the first-in-the-nation State be small enough to allow unknown and lesser funded candidates a realistic chance at breaking through. The first-in-the-nation State must also represent the nation’s ideals and values. Sadly, New Hampshire no longer does." http://granitegrok.com/

GreenMountainPolitics1:
"Tonight we heard that Bill Gardner and his office are "actively" and "officially" exploring dates to hold the '08 New Hampshire Primary between Thanksgiving and Christmas of '07." http://greenmountainpolitics1.blogspot.com/index.html

Obama Calls Granite State Students

On the eve of his trip to New Hampshire, college students throughout the Granite State participated in a conference call with Senator Barack Obama. A group of students at Saint Anselm College took part in the call, in a study room at Geisel Library. While waiting for Obama, the group chatted about upcoming events and why they favored Obama. One student said he was supporting Obama because "he's a once in a lifetime candidate." The students agreed that Obama was a "JFK or RFK type figure."

Before taking questions from students, Obama told callers that the Virginia Tech shooting was a tragedy and is "something hard to explain, not sure it could have been prevented." The Illinois Senator urged the students to deal with "preventable tragedies." Obama also told his supporters that students have the chance to "transform the country," while also being at the "center of change."

Barack Obama then took questions from Boston College and UNLV-Reno. In response to the BC question, Obama said that the United States must pursue a policy in which it "thinks before acting." While, UNLV-Reno asked about health insurance for recently graduated college students. Senator Obama said that to help ease the burden on students he has proposed a policy in which people would buy into a pool system. Obama ended the call by telling the students that they have a "huge opportunity to transform the nation."

Romney: It Takes A Family...Unless You're A Company

According to Mitt Romney, it doesn't "take a village" to raise a child. However, does his stance contradict some of his previous statements? The Romney camp argues that Romney's "comments were about public-private partnerships, not families. Romney was referencing corporations, not parents." AP's Phil Elliott has the story and a link:

"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, also a candidate for president, is wrong when she says "it takes a village" to raise a child.

"I think it's time for us to recognize every child deserves a mother and a father," Romney said during a speech to New Hampshire Republicans this weekend in Newbury.

The statement, however, runs counter to what The Boston Globe quoted him as saying in 1998:

"Hillary Clinton is very much right, it does take a village, and we are a village and we need to work together in a non-skeptical, no-finger-pointing way. . . ."

Presidential Contenders Court "Blue Hampshire" Blogger

Presidential candidates courting New Hampshire bloggers is quickly become a new twist in politics. The McCain camp has Patrick Hynes of "Ankle Biting Pundits" and now the Dems are looking for scoop-up Michael Caulfield of "Blue Hampshire." Here's the story from The Keene Sentinel and a link to "Blue Hampshire."

"Democratic presidential candidates have been paying attention to Keene resident Michael Caulfield.

So why is he getting all the attention?

It's because he's a blogger for BlueHampshire, a popular left-leaning political Web site that Caulfield and two partners launched in November 2006."

Kucinich: Summer Home Was A Metaphor

It appears that Dennis Kucinich will not be buying a summer home in the Granite State. This is from The Hotline:

Dennis Kucinich "has been spending so much time on the stump" in NH, there were "rumors" he's going to buy a summer home in the state for the coming months. But Kucinich confirmed that he isn't "planning to buy a home" in NH despite the reports in several New England news outlets. The misunderstanding stemmed from a tongue-in-cheek comment that Kucinich made last week at a NH bookstore, as he described the time he's spent campaigning in the state. Kucinich spokesperson Sharon Jimenez: "It was a metaphor. He's going to be giving a great deal of his time to New Hampshire, but he's not going to be living there" (Eaton, Cleveland.com, 4/13).

Weather Doesn't Stop Mitt

Photo is:©Chris Fitzgerald/CandidatePhotos.com

Before a crowd of 100 Republicans, Mitt Romney discussed lower taxes, preventing tax increases and urged those in attendance to elect Republicans "because we sure as heck don't want Hillary Clinton as our next President."

Romney told the crowd that earlier in the day a branch blocked a road and a group of motorists moved the branch. Romney said, "They didn't say, 'Where's government? There's a branch in the road.' They said, 'We live here and we're going to do something about it.' That's why I love New Hampshire."

Jim Gilmore Disses New Hampshire Primary

It appears that former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore has a bone to pick with the Granite State. According to Jonathan Martin of The Politico, Gilmore told the crowd at Iowa GOP's Lincon Day Dinner that "It seems like the entire nation still respects the Iowa caucuses." Gilmore was arguing that the change in the primary schedule will not affect the Iowa caucuses. The long shot Republican presidential contender has been to the state two times.

A Heated Exchange for Hillary

The following report is from ABCNew's Eloise Harper:

A Heated Exchange for Hillary

ABCNews' Eloise Harper reports: After fielding many questions ranging from mental health care to veteran affairs at a Town Hall Meeting in Hampton, NH, Senator Hillary Clinton received a heated question about Iraq. A woman who had traveled from New York asked Sen. Clinton if she had read the report given to her in 2002 on intelligence and the Iraq war.

Clinton said she had been briefed on the report, and the woman screamed back, "Did you read it?!" Notably uncomfortable, the Senator repeated that she had been briefed. This exchange went back and forth about three times.

The woman sat down and Clinton explained, "If I had known then what I know now, I never would have voted to give this President the authority." Clinton also said she believed she was giving the President the authority to send U.N. inspectors to Iraq.

When Clinton finished the answer, the woman continued to scream but was drowned out by applause for the Senator. The woman was escorted out of the building.

Woodburn Endorses Richardson

Bill Richardson has picked-up his biggest New Hampshire endorsement. Former Dem party chief Jeff Woodburn has signed on to help the New Mexico Governor's campaign. Here's the tip, from Kevin Landrigan:

"New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson needs a lot of momentum to break into the top tier of Democratic presidential candidates, but he got a nice shot of adrenaline at week’s end.

Former state Democratic Party Chairman Jeff Woodburn has signed on.

“He’s got what any candidate would want: an impeccable resume. He’s been a U.N. ambassador, a governor, a congressman, a worldwide diplomat,’’ Woodburn said.

“What I like most is despite that stature, he’s one of the most approachable and likeable candidates I’ve ever been around.’’

Hirshberg: Waiting To Make Formal Endorsement

This item appeared in The Concord Monitor's Capital Beat:

"Since Tom Vilsack dropped out of the 2008 presidential race, Stonyfield Farms CEO Gary Hirshberg has become a must-see for Democratic presidential candidates. So far, Chris Dodd, Bill Richardson, Barack Obama and Edwards have met him at his Londonderry plant or his home in Concord.

In 2004, Hirshberg supported Edwards after Howard Dean dropped out of the race. This time, he was an early supporter of Vilsack. The day Vilsack ended his run, Hirshberg fielded a call from Obama.

Now he says he is financially supporting both Edwards's and Obama's campaigns but is waiting to make a formal endorsement. Hirshberg has previously shied away from supporting presidential candidates who are senators. But Edwards is no longer a senator, and Obama isn't "really a senator, because he hasn't been there long enough," Hirshberg said.

None of the Republican candidates have paid him a visit, but they are welcome. "We've got plenty of Republican voters at Stonyfield, and certainly our doors are not only open to Democrats," Hirshberg said."

Biden Gets Tested In Laconia

Kate Davidson of The Concord Monitor has coverage of Joe Biden's trip to New Hampshire. Senator Biden attended a house party in Concord and a town hall forum in Laconia. Here's a bit of the article:

"At Bill and Hansi Glahn's house on Coventry Road, a group of about 30 voters squeezed onto couches and sat on rugs around the fireplace yesterday afternoon, patiently listening as Biden outlined his plan to pull troops out of Iraq by 2008.

His appearance in Laconia three hours later sparked livelier debate, as the senator stood in the middle of a circle of about 150 people who challenged him with questions and comments that tested his experience as a foreign policy maker and his ideas about domestic problems."
